All square at Greenock

Greenock Under 16 5 Cumnock Under 16 5

Cumnock braved wet and windy conditions to visit Greenock to play their last Conference game knowing that a win would leave them an outside chance of winning the league.

Although Cumnock had a comfortable win against Greenock at the start of the season, fast improving results indicated that Greenock would be a much tougher proposition away from home. This proved to be true as both teams served up a game full of commitment and endeavour.

Greenock took the lead in 10 minutes with a beautifully worked try which saw them sweep the ball across the park to allow their winger to score an unconverted try in the corner. Greenock made the most of the wind at their back and threatened a few time more. Cumnock also had opportunities but poor hands and poor decision making saw these disappear.

The second half was mainly Cumnock on the attack with the wind at their backs against a committed Greenock defence. Cumnock went close on 4 or 5 occasions with only a poor or dropped pass stopping them scoring. Eventually Calum McClounie spotted a gap and drove through to burst clear and score and unconverted try.

It was nearly all Cumnock on the attack as they manufactured chance after chance only to fritter them away with poor ball retention our poor handling.

Time was not on their side and the referee blew for full time.

Coach Andrew Watt commented, “ we really had enough ball and possession to win 3 games in the second hand but credit to Greenock who refused to buckle. I can’t fault the effort of all the players but really need to go away and work on a few things. Our ball retention in the forwards was poor, our passing and catching was terrible and some of our team systems in attack and defence misfired a bit. The good news is that its all fixable and with a bit of hard work we will be back to form again. I would like to pick out Hamish White today at fullback as man of the match as he never put a foot wrong in defence or attack. Hamish has been improving every game and he has became a really consistent performer for us.”

Cumnock 16s are looking to increase their squad as they build for the step up to under 18 rugby next year. Any players interesting in trying out should come to training at 8pm on Tuesdays or 7pm on Thursdays at Cumnock Juniors 4G park at Townhead Street in Cumnock.
