Cumnock Under 16s 27 Alan Glens 14

Cumnock got back into league action this Sunday as they took on the 3rd placed team in their conference. Alan Glens are a fast improving outfit who have improved game on game all season. Cumnock expected a tough game and they were not disappointed.

The first half started off brightly for Cumnock as their forwards got on the front foot and punched holes in the Glens defence. Sustained pressure led to tries for Jamie Drummond and Dylan Chidwick which were both converted by Owen Young. Young added a penalty before Glens scored making the score 17-7 at half time.

In the second half Glens were inspired and put Cumnock right onto the back foot before being rewarded by a converted try. At 17-14 Cumnock were on the ropes and only committed defence kept Glens from scoring again. However Cumnock showed their mettle and dragged themselves back into the game. For the last 20 minutes they were the stronger team and went close a number of times before a fantastic team move saw Chidwick free Hamish White to score in the corner. In the dying minutes Captain Wallace Findlay pounced on a loose ball and nipped in for the last score in the corner.

Coach Andrew Watt commented after the game, “ This was a good solid performance from the boys against a tough team. When Glens came back within 3 points they could have easily lost the game but they were able to dig deep and ultimately finish strongly. I was really pleased with players such as John McIlwain, Robbie Stewart and Kevin Van Der Leest who really showed up well in the game.”

Next week Cumnock play East Kilbride at home.
