A cold Tuesday evening saw a large crowd treated to a good game of competitive rugby between the Cougars and Morriston RFC.

Report by Kevan Aitken

This Swansea based team were on tour and had pitched up against Ayr on the previous Sunday. As Morriston were short of players a number of lads from Ayr were included in the team that played at Broomfield.

The first half was very competitive and neither team were taking any prisoners. Conditions on the hard dusty surface were ideal for running rugby and the visitors soon opened the scoring. Both teams traded scores in the first half and tries from Bradley Smith, after charging down the clearance kick from the Welsh full-back, and a close range effort from Callum Bark kept the Cougars in the game at the break. Half time score 14-20.

Injuries took their toll on the home team as the game wore on. In particular scrum-half Aidan Kerr went off with a neck injury and a dislocated knee put an end to Bark's season. Two tries from Jack Reilly, in particular a cheeky tap and go from a penalty while the visitors stood watching gave the home team some hope. However the visitors kept up the pressure and the Ayr players in particular proved too strong, with Morriston running out comfortable winners in the end.

A disappointing night for the Cougars but this was their first competitive game in over a month. With the season now completed thoughts are turning to next season with the majority of the players looking forward to playing U18 rugby. This will be a big step up but the coaches intend to keep up the training over the summer months in preparation for the challenges that lie ahead.
