Report by Kevan Aitken. The Cougars pitched up in sunny Coatbridge looking to get back to winning ways.

However, upon close inspection, the rugby pitch so closely resembled the parched grasslands of the Serengeti that the coaches were on the lookout for herds of wilde beast roaming about! It was obvious that no full contact game could be played without risking the safety of the players and both sets of coaches agreed to play a ten-a-side Touch Rugby match, with both teams allowed rolling substitutions.

This play suited the Cougars and their slick handling skills and angles of running soon punched holes in the WD defence. Both teams traded scores through the first two periods, with two tries apeice from Gregor Paxton and Robbie McLaren cancelled out by four tries from the home team. As the game wore on however the superior fitness level of the visitors told as WD wilted in the heat. Three further tries from G Paxton, one from Jack Reilly and a brace from Aidan Kerr saw the Cougars through in the end.

It was a great day for this type of rugby, where the players had the chance to show off their rugby skills to the appreciative crowd. The game was played in a great spirit by both teams, which made life easier for the referree. John Duncan made his debut for the Cougars and played his part in the well deserved victory, which saw a reverse of the result in the earlier meeting of these two teams.
