Cumnock/Killie S2's dish out a rugby lesson to their visitors

Cumnock/Killie RFC S2 (48-0) Biggar RFC S2

After a lengthy shut down due the weather the Cumnock/Kilmarnock S2 side wasted no time in stepping fully into their stride again. Their vistors from Biggar have dished out the medicine to Cumnock sides in the past and as such the home side took to the field expecting a tough encounter. After early midfield exchanges it was the Broomfield based outfit that slowly took a stranglehold of play with every posession threatening to break the visitors defences.

Confident handling and strong showings in contact punched holes in the Biggar defence and only some stout tackling held out the impending homesde onslaught.

First score for Cumnock came from a turnover ball in midfield that was moved through hands allowing Taylor Howie to smash throuh an attempted tackle and run under the posts from 40 metres out. A second score by Callan Gordon followed almost straight from the next kick off where once again the ball was moved through hands before another run from distance in between the sticks. The visitors where starting to crumble under the early pressure and a sunbsequent encampment on the Biggar line led to Scott Faulds crashing over for the next score. Gordon crossed the line again bfoer the end of the first thrid of the encounter.

The size of the victory suggests one way traffic however the battle in midfield was intense with lenghty phases of open play producing little territorial advantage. However the 'Nock defence was solid and the unrelenting pressure being applied to the Biggar possession was slowly starting to wear down the vistors and it was a matter of when, not if, the home team were going to score. again.

The middle section of this encounter produced another 4 unanswered scores for Callan Gordon (x2), Stewart McEwan and Gavin Wight respectively with the latter being the pick of the bunch. A midfield turnover was quickly moved wide only to find out of position prop Stewart McEwan on the wing. After crashing through a couple tackles he put on the gas and accelerated down the touchline closely supported by Gavin Wight. After covering some 40 metres the prop was finally hunted down by the Biggar rearguard however he retained enough composure to offload to the New Cumnock flyer, Wight, who ghosted over the line for a tremendous score.

Tha latter third of the game whilst still hotly contested was where the impressive Cumnock/Killie defence effected relentless pressure on the visitors allowing them no space to work with and ultimately forcing regular turnovers. With attacking options in the forwards, half back and backline the Biggar side were spread very thin and a succession of scores rained down to administer the final ignominy of a whitewash. Scorers for Cumnock in this phase were Gregor Aitken, Jack Reilly, Keiran Frater and another form Calln Gordon to cap off a fine individual performance with all of the Cumnock/Killie scores being converted with a superb kicking performance from fly half David Smith.

The coaches comments after the game were glowing "Whilst it was terrific to see the our attack in full flow the most pleasing part of this game came from our defence. Our work rate, positioning and determination to create turnover ball was something that each and every member of this team should proud of and should be seen as a minimum standard for the games ahead".

The team now travels to to play local giants Ayr next Sunday where each and every member of the team will need to reprouduce todays performance if they are to compete.
