That is exactly what the spectators were treated to as both teams played some fine rugby, with excellent handling skills evident in both sets of players.
The Cumnock / Kilmarnock S2's were supplemented by a number of Cumnock S1 players, who, although dwarfed in stature by a number of their opponents, played magnificently, never flinching from the big tackles and demonstarting very good handling skills when running forward with the ball.
The game was played with a tremendous intensity with both sides tackling fiercely. The Cougars were sharper at the breakdowns initially but the bigger Ardrossan boys started to control the rucks and mauls in the middle of the game. Great efforts from A Harkiss and N Kerr in the tight confines of the rucks and mauls secured lots of good possession for scrum half Hamilton to release the backs with some great forward movement from T Howie and C Park.
The Cougars scores came from C Gordon (3), A Kerr (2) and T Howie (1), with stand-off D Smith converting every one of his kicks at goal.
The coaches noted a lot of positives from this display. The Cumnock and Kilmarnock players are gelling into an excellent team with a good spirit and a high skill level. The players have a belief in their abilities and their confidence is increasing with every game.
