This was a very close fought encounter against a determined team from Castle Douglas.

Report by Morton Houston

Again the game was played in 3 sections each of 20 minutes. Cumnock started off the brighter and looked to move the ball at every opportunity. The backs showed sparkling handling which saw them generate quite a number of over laps. Tries came from inspired full back Rob Drummond and centre Dillon Chidwick.

The middle quarter was a much less promising showing with a number of missed tackles allowing Stewartry to get back into the game, Tries came from Rob Drummond and Owen Young. Young also added a conversion.

In the last quarter Cumnock got their act together, the team had a better shape and started to compete better in the rucks and mauls. Jamie Caldwell caught the eye with a number of crucial tackles as well as some of the best lineout throwing you’ll ever see at this level. Tries came from Rob Drummond, Jamie Drummond and Wallace Findlay who also kicked a conversion. Man of the match was a difficult one, Adam Watt had a belter with sniping runs, big tackles and numerous turn overs, Jamie Drummond had one of his best games as he added ball distribution to his running skills, Andy Houston orchestrated the backs line very well and Owen Young scored a peach of a try.

However man of the match was Rob Drummond, not because of his 3 tries, nor because of all the ball he turned over. He earned the title by executing a perfect one on one tackle on Stewartry’s biggest and fastest player who was clean through before Drummond scythed him down. The tackle was described as a thing of beauty by watching supporters.

Coach (and bookie) honest Alan Montgomery said after the game, “ When our forwards play well and win ball we can match any team. Its frustrating sometimes when they switch off and the team struggles. Its good to see players like Jamie Caldwell progressing and hopefully as the season goes on all our forwards will continue to develop.

Next week there is no S2 game and players will be training on grass at Broomfield. Times will be confirmed later in the week.
