Cumnock got off to a solid start in their first game after the summer break.

Report by Morton Houston

Looking a bit shaky in the first of 3 20 minute slots they were out performed by a strong tackling Greenock team. The Cumnock team seemed slow to react and seemed to be suffering from only a 10 minute warm up.

Early into the second twenty they went 2 tries down as Greenock’s flying fullback outstripped the Cumnock defence. This seemed to galvanise Cumnock and they begin to look more like themselves with repeated line breaks and turnovers. Cumnock scored their first when quick thinking Wallace Finlay took a quick tap and beat 3 tacklers to score in the corner. Next up was Andy Houston who waltzed through the Greenock defence before touching down. Unfortunately the Greenock referee was unsighted and chalked the score off.

In the last 20 Cumnock started to play some nice rugby. Aggressive tackling by Jamie Drummond and some clever clearing out by Kieran Makin led to more ball which the Cumnock backs used well. Man of the match Rob Drummond ran some good lines all game and this was eventually to lead to a score when he took a scissors pass and sliced through the whole Greenock defence.

A draw didn’t seem enough for Cumnock and they continued to dominate and press the Greenock line. One long range break out saw some clever interplay by Cumnock which seemed to be leading to a score. Unfortunately 2 Greenock players clashed heads going in for a tackle and the referee correctly decided to blow up 5 minutes early.

Coach Alan Montgomery commented, “As a first game back this wasn’t too bad. We started off slowly but improved as the game went on and we were unlucky not to come away with a win. This is a good warm up for the visit of Ayr next week and with 5 or 6 players missing we can look forward to further improvement.”

Cumnock S2’s train on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Cumnock Rugby Club from 6:30 to 8pm. New players are always welcome. Registration day is Sunday 31st August.
