Cumnock S2’s continued their recent run of good form by winning their home tournament against some of the best teams in the West of Scotland.

Report by Morton Houston

Cumnock 7 Strathaven 3

In the first round Cumnock came out the blocks slowly and made hard work of this game through some poor passing and weak tackling. The game was a straight 20 minutes and saw Cumnock win by 2 tries to one. Tries after 10 minutes from Jamie Drummond and Hamish White seemed to have Cumnock in the driving seat however a lapse of concentration saw Strathaven come right back into the game with the result only sure when the final whistle went.

Cumnock 7 Marr 3

This was a very tight game with Marr well on top for the first 10 minutes. Only resolute tackling from the Cumnock players kept the strong running Troon outfit at bay. With only 5 minutes to go Marr drove over for a well deserved try. Cumnock however are made of strong stuff and they worked their way back up the park for Jamie Drummond to bulldoze over. Owen Young converted for a slender lead for Cumnock to defend. In the last minutes Dylan Chidwick threaded through a well angled kick which Cumnock retrieved allowing Wallace Findlay to cross for Cumnock’s second.

Cumnock 3 Whitecraigs 0

This was a real nail biter as Cumnock sought some respectability following a crushing win away at Whitecraigs earlier in the year. The game could not have been closer as both sides fought for any advantage at all. Cumnock’s score came from the ever dependable Jamie Drummond who scored his third of the day following a well engineered lineout move. Man of the match in the final was Hamish White who saved Cumnock again and again with last ditch tackles and fantastic high ball takes. White playing only his second game at full back inspired his team to a tournament victory much to the delight of the home crowd.

Coach Alan Montgomery said after the game, “ I could not have been prouder of the performance of every one of the players. This was a real team effort with everyone doing their share. It’s a great way to finish off the season and a great reward for all the hard work from the players.
