STRATHAVEN 18 - 3 CUMNOCK Report by Martin Wallace

Strathaven was the venue on Sunday for the s1/s2 squad who took to the field in cold damp conditions feeling a bit off after the journey.
This was soon forgotten as the game started and play was intense from the first kick of the ball with both sides competing hard for possession.
Strathaven had a slightly more experienced pool of players to pick from and it showed at the breakdowns as Cumnock s2 players initially won the ball at rucks would eventually lose it due to lack of support.
Defensively Cumnock played well minimising the amount of tries with well placed tackles and tight lines but sometimes getting sucked in left overlaps resulting in a score for the opposition.
On attack Cumnock lacked the forward momentum to cross the line as too many runs were made across the pitch instead of up it.
Eventually Callum Bell made it across the goal line scoring the only Cumnock try of the game but this does not reflect the skill, hard work and effort put into the game by all who played in a Cumnock shirt.
The team left the field with their heads held high as the score did not mirror their performance. Strathaven may have won but they had to work hard to get it and with a bit of support training might not be victorious at the return match.
Cumnock showed a lot of guts and proved they are not a walkover team who will continue to improve as the season unfolds.
