Cumnock/Stewartry Dig Deep For Draw

New Team Digs Deep and Goes Close

Cumnock/Stewartry got their season off to a good start when they were unlucky to draw a game with an enormous and committed Dalziel outfit. Due to a shortage of players both Stewartry and Cumnock have merged for the season and early indications are positive. Despite never having trained together and having only 45 minutes to warm up both sets of players gelled and produced a very determined and skilful performance.

The Dalziel team were huge and their pack in particular were easily a stone a man heavier that Cumnock/Stewartry. Despite this the home team did not take a back ward step as they rained tackle after tackle in.

The first half was shaded by Dalziel as Cumnock Stewartry found their feet and it ended in a 0-0 stalemate. To the fore in the defensive wall were players like Ben Houfe, Connor Hill and Ryan White. In the forwards Euan Bell, Scott Teece, Dillon Naismith and Gregor Hamblin put themselves about to great effect.

In the second half Cumnock/Stewartry fell behind to a Dalziel penalty however 10 minutes later Sean Houston did brilliantly to round the defence and score in the corner. 10 minutes later a sweeping move started off by Danny Perkins and also featuring Ryan White, saw Houston once more go close before feeding standoff John Watt who brilliantly dabbed down in the corner.

Cumnock/Stewartry dug deep and looked like they might pull off the most unlikely of wins. They repelled attack after attack and repeatedly turned over promising Dalziel ball. However a win was not to be as a gutsy Dalziel team dug deep to score in the last second. The Dalziel kicker held his nerve to level the score for what was probably a fair result, 10 all.

Next week Cumnock/Stewartry are looking to build on this impressive start with their second game in the Conference against Livingstone.
