Cougar Cubs have fun in the sun

Cumnock Micro’s played their second tournament of the month in the glorious sunshine at Calderglen in East Kilbride. Cumnock were in a large group and would be playing 6 games which would be a tough task especially in the heat. In the first game they played Linlithgow 2’s and set their stall out straightaway with some fast attacking and great defending. Cumnock were using their newfound speedy play and this caught all their opponents out in every game they played. With players all being given their own jobs they all stuck to them impeccably. The game finished 6-2 to Cumnock.
Into the second game against the hosts and Cumnock started at full speed again scoring straight from the off with some fantastic play up the wings between Iona and Riley who appeared to be scoring tries for fun. Blair and Adam marshalled the defensive line only allowing East Kilbride to score twice in the 8-minute game. Into final minute and Katie made a dash up the left wing only to be thwarted just before the tryline, however a quick lay off and this allowed John to cross over unobstructed. Final Score 6-2 to Cumnock.
The third game was against our local rivals Ayr and this game was end to end in which even the coaches struggled to keep up with the players at times. Iona tormented the Ayr backline with some darting runs and Callum scored some fantastic tries, the highlight was when he jigged his way through the full defence to cross the line for his third try. The moment of the game was when Ayr were almost certain to score the winning try but out of nowhere appeared Blair and a quick-thinking dive allowed him to tackle the Ayr player thus preventing the try meaning the game finished 5-5.
Cumnock then faced a young Ardrossan team in the fourth game and their star player was in fine form tormenting the Cumnock defence. Cumnock matched Ardrossan try for try until, and in the final minute, a quick turnover allowed John to make a move for the corner resulting in the final try of the game and the game finishing 7-6 to Cumnock.
In the fifth game Linlithgow 1’s then played Cumnock and Cumnock knew that they were in with a chance of winning the tournament with their previous results all going to plan. Linlithgow started well and tormented out right-hand side wing until Tilly was moved there and she was putting some great tackles in and Linlithgow did not score anymore after that defensive change. Adam decided that he would like to get on the scoresheet and crossed the line twice in the game. The final score was 6-2 to Cumnock.
Into the final game and Cumnock had their tails up and wanted to finish on a high by winning their final game. Cumnock started and straight from the start they scored a try with John dancing his way through the crowd of Strathaven players. Strathaven tried to score but the defensive line of Cumnock held firm and our attacking line were on fine form too with some fantastic support play and quick starts. The final score finished 7-2 to Cumnock
Cumnock tied with Ayr for first place, however as Ayr had scored more tries compared to Cumnock they were awarded the trophy. In the coaches eyes our young team played their hearts out and we are immensely of proud of them all especially in the sapping heat throughout the day. Bring on the Cumnock tournament next week where we will start where we left off from at East Kilbride.
Squad: Adam, Blair, Callum, Iona, John, Katie, Riley, Tilly
