Cougars enjoy fantastic evening at Scotstoun

Cumnock's primary 4 squad took 15 players up to Scotstoun to play in the eagerly anticipated Glasgow Warriors pre-match festival prior to the Pro14 match with Cardiff.
Prior to matches starting Cumnock enjoyed an unexpected meeting with Scotland number 8 David Denton.
On a perfect evening for rugby, Cumnock first played a very talented & well organised Birkmyre team who stunned the Cougars with a try within the first minute. Cumnock found their feet quickly though, attacking with pace & flair with Mason, Lewis and Ryan all scoring while Murray was unlucky to have a try disallowed for a foot in touch after an excellent break. In defence the Cougars were determined & aggressive with Cuinn & Logan leading the line well. Birkmyre managed to break through Cumnock's stifling defence for one more well deserved try despite Ewan's last-ditch tackle.
The enthralling & highly competitive encounter finished 5-2 to Cumnock.
In their second game Cumnock faced slightly more familiar opponents in Dalziel.
The Cougars were quick of the mark in this one with Paul scoring from the first possession. Dalziel responded immediately, their strong ball carriers proving hard to contain. Paul grabbed a couple more tries with Reiley & Matthew also scoring. Ciara was very unlucky not to score, losing control of the ball on the try line after a barnstorming charge. Aaron & Izaak pressed forward well in defence with Finlay & Maddy also making tackles.
Cumnock were guilty of surrendering possession regularly in the latter part of the match as they tried to force the game with ambitious offloads. Dalziel took full advantage of the gifts to score 3 more tries to produce a tight finish with the game ending 5-4 to Cumnock.
Cumnock's third game saw them face Stirling County. With both sides having won their first 2 games this one promised to be a cracker, victory ensuring a further game on the the main pitch at Scotstoun in front of 10,000 spectators.
The determined Cumnock side set the tone for the match as Reiley carved through County's defence to score an early opener. High energy defence from Cumnock denied Stirling's talented runners any space. Cumnock used the touchline well to regain possession & that, along with a few penalties gave Cumnock a regular supply of possession which they ruthlessly converted into points, Lewis, Mason and Paul all scoring deserved tries. Matthew was denied a score by putting a foot in touch after a searing break. Ryan's excellent defence brought a deserved try as he pounced on a loose ball to score.
The fantastic intensity, discipline and flair from Cumnock was a joy to see, the game ending 7-0, ensuring Cumnock would get the chance to play on the main stage at halftime in the Warriors match.
The Cougars were able to relax and enjoy seeing the Warriors run in a couple of first half tries before taking to the hallowed turf of Scotstoun for a pulsating match against our old friends Lenzie. With both sets of players revelling in the big match atmosphere they rose to the occasion and served up a well contested game. Both teams attacked with flair & pace roared on by the crowd. Lenzie's excellent opener was cancelled out by Mason's burst. Lenzie took the lead again but Lewis burst through the middle of their defence to equalise against before Mason snatched a late winner with a fantastic break down the wing. The match, well worthy of it's lofty surroundings ended 3-2 in favour of Cumnock.
The evening fully lived up to expectations with players, coaches & families enjoying a fantastic occasion with lots of top quality rugby from Cumnock and the Warriors. The Cumnock coaches went home delighted with their players' commitment and performance (as did Dave Rennie!).
Squad: Aaron, Ciara, Cuinn, Ewan, Finlay, Izaak, Lewis, Logan, Maddy, Mason, Matthew, Murray, Paul, Reiley, Ryan.
