Injury Ravaged S1 Team Overpowered at Ardrossan

This match had an end of season look about it with only eight Cumnock players able to start the game. Ardrossan loaned players to make the numbers up to 13-a-side to enable the match to take place.

Cumnock started well, going forward and keeping the game deep inside their opponents half. After about eight minutes though it was Ardrossan who broke away to score and they then dominated the remainder of the first period, running in four more tries with no reply from Cumnock.

A stern lecture from the coaches about tackling and support play saw a much improved performance. Andrew Harkiss started to make some penetrating breaks supported well by Ross Philips and Robbie McLaren and scrum-half Aiden Kerr was linking well with Gregor Aitken. Ardrossan scored twice then Kerr broke from the back of a setpiece and crashed over from short range to score. Ardrossan replied with another try then Aitken stripped the ball from his opposite number in midfield and started a counter-attack before releasing a well timed pass to his centre who raced through to score.

Cumnock dominated the final play scoring first from a lovely move involving most of the backs, with Aitken adding a conversion. More scores should have followed but the breaks wer not coming. Ardrossan score another try in the final play of the game.

A big thank you to the Ardrossan players who helped out on the day. There were some notable performances amongst the Cumnock players, particularly when considering that a number were playing out of their regular positions. Man of the match was Gregor Aitken for a fine display of passing and aggressive tackling..
