Report by Morton Houston
This was a comfortable win for Cumnock even if they did not reach the levels of performance of the previous week at Hamilton .
The first half was a relatively close affair thanks largely to Cumnock’s repeated habit of dropping the last try scoring pass. This saw around 5 tries go a begging as cold wet hands dropped pass after pass. Cumnock still managed to run in 3 tries through sustained pressure. These came from Owen Young, Kieran Owens and Jamie Drummond and 2 conversions went over from Young and Wallace Findlay.
The second half so a better handling display from Cumnock against less experienced opposition. Tries rained in from Jamie Drummond (3), his cousin Rob Drummond, Owen Young 2 more, Andy Houston, Ross Marr and Wallace Findlay. 3 more conversions went over from Ross Marr and Owen Young. Irvine replied with 2 well deserved and well worked scores of their own.
Cumnock had much the sharper backs and Watt, Houston, Rob Drummond and Owen Young in midfield ran the show. In the forwards Jamie Drummond was his usual rumbustious self whilst Lucas McCallum and Wallace Findlay had a number of good runs. New players Scott Wallace and Declan Grainger had their first run about and did themselves proud.
Coach Alan Hill was not completely satisfied after the game, “We scored a lot of tries against less experienced players but we will need to sharpen up a lot on our defence if we are to compete with the best teams at this level. We have been working hard on our defence but it was patchy to say the least. However on a cold, wet day the boys deserve great credit for sticking to the task and scoring some great tries.”
Next week Cumnock S1s are away to Dalziel, details to follow. Training takes place on Tuesday at Auchinleck astro at 6:30-7:30 and on Thursday on Cumnock Academy astro from 6pm – 7pm. New players are welcome to come along and give rugby a try.
