Report by Morton Houston

Following a 7 week lay off the Cumnock players were keen to get back into action. Right up to kick off this game was in question due to the wet weather but as it turned out the game was played in relatively good conditions.

Cumnock did not look like a team coming out of an extended lay off as they played one of their best games of the season. This was real team performance rounded off with 11 tries. From the off Cumnock looked as if they meant business. Jamie Caldwell, Matt Montgomerie, Kieran Makin and Ashley Popowicz were into every ruck and maul and generally made nuisances of themselves. Hamish White, Kieran Murray and Ross Marr had several sniping runs each and nailed their tackles when called on. Evan Smith had yet another good game at full back including some great tackles on big forwards breaking through.

Dylan Chidwick was a revelation both in attack and defence. He nailed some great tackles however there is no doubt that his 2 tries from 80 meters were the highlights. On both occasions he outstripped both the winger and full back to show a deceptive turn of speed.

Owen Young darted in for a superb solo effort whilst vice captain Finlay Wallace was again a revelation with big powerful runs, great turnovers and 2 very well taken and deserved tries.

The half back of Adam “Killa” Watt, Andy Houston (Captain) and Rob Drummond were again very much in control. They sprayed the ball all over the place with great skill in trying conditions.

Man of the match was Jamie Drummond. He may have won this for his great wipe outs and turnovers, or possibly for his superb support work but really it would be hard to ignore his incredible haul of 6 tries.

Coach Billy Ramsay was delighted at the end of the game, “this was a great performance by all the boys who played today. There was a lot of commitment and clever play on display. Although some of the individual performances were top class the whole team played as one and got the result their hard work deserved.”

Training next week is at Auchinleck astro from 6:30 – 7:30 on Thursday night and Cumnock Astro from 6:00 – 7:00 on Thursday nights. All new players are welcome to come along and give rugby a try.

Cumnock have a home game against Irvine next week please see coaches for details. Also please remember to bring in 6 nations forms.
