Cumnock visited Lenzie on Sunday to play their S1 team for the first time.

Report by Morton Houston

The weather could not have been more perfect with sunny dry conditions. After a couple of not so good performances recently Cumnock were hoping for an improved showing, which is exactly what they got.

Playing in the first of 3 20 minute sections Cumnock got off to a great start with some sustained pressure. Cumnock forwards like Scott Grierson, pack leader Wallace Findlay and Lucas McCallum continually made ground as they drove through Lenzie tacklers. This led to some great ball for Cumnock backs which allowed them to break the gain line time after time. It was from one of these that Cumnock’s first score came from as they broke through before the unstoppable Jamie Drummond cantered over for his first of 5 tries.

The second try came from great interplay in the backs followed by a darting run by Andy Houston resulting in a score between the posts. Houston broke away again soon after and a despairing Lenzie tackle stopped him feet from the line where he off loaded to Jamie Drummond in support for a score.

In the second period Cumnock took up where they left off with great breaks from Adam Watt, Owen Young and Rob Drummond. Rob Drummond outwitted 2 opponents for Cumnock’s 4th whilst Young darted through a maze of Lenzie players to claim Cumnock’s 5th. He broke away again and seemed to beat every defender twice before off loading to Jamie Drummond for his 3rd. Ross Marr playing his best game of the season scored a cracker and was closely denied on the line for a second. Drummond then broke away for his 4th of the day. The highlight of this section was a trade mark bone crunching tackle from Owen Young.

In the last section Cumnock continued in the same vein. Jamie Drummond stole a ball out of a maul and found himself in the clear for a 50 meter dash under the posts. This was quickly followed by Dylan Chidwick who burst through in mid field and ran 40 meters to score between the sticks. Lenzie not to be outdone scored a cracking try as the ball passed through their hands from one side of the pitch to the other resulting in a well deserved try. The most notable event of the section was a thumping tackle by Joshua Wallace on his opposite number which stopped him dead in his tracks.

Coach Billy Ramsay said after the game, “I was really pleased with the whole team. We have been a bit luke warm recently but all the boys were back on form today. Players like Evan Smith, Kieran Owens, Scott Grierson, Kieran Murray, Hamish White and Kieran Makin put in a big shift which allowed other players to play.

Next week training will be at Catrine games hall on Tuesday from 6-7pm and Cumnock astro turf also 6 – 7 on Thursday. Details for Sunday will be passed out by coaches once finalised.
