This game very nearly fell foul of the weather with heavy parks and sporadic showers.

Report by Morton Houston

What a shame it would have been if it didn’t go ahead as the hardy supporters were treated to an entertaining and skilful display of rugby by all involved.

The game was played in three 20 minute sections. The first section saw Cumnock getting off to an uncharacteristically fast start with an early try by Owen Young and a second by the unstoppable Jamie Drummond. This was quickly followed by one from the impressive Lucas McCallum, a fourth by Andy Houston. The play of the first section was by Adam “Killa” Watt who stopped a certain Hamilton try with a trade mark perfectly timed tap tackle.

In the second section Cumnock continued to dominate in the forwards and despite an early score from Hamilton Cumnock went on to score further tries from Jamie Drummond (2), Andy Houston and Lucas McCallum. Houston ’s try was a diamond as he picked up a wide pass then waltzed through 5 tackles before scoring in the corner. McCallum’s impressively for a prop forward was similar as he picked up a loose ball, shrugged off 3 tackles before outstripping the defence to score between the posts.

The final section continued in the same vein. Jamie Drummond was irresistible as he fired in tackle after tackle and made run after run. Scoring 2 more tries to make an incredible total of 5, his last involved tackling an opponent, stealing the ball and running in from half way. Equally impressive with his tackling and running was Owen Young who deservedly claimed a score himself. Extra points were claimed by the boot of Wallace Finlay (4) and Owen Young (2).

Coach Alan Montgomerie when interviewed said, “I was really impressed by the team effort today. The forwards were much more involved and produced some really good ball. This was capitalised on in the backs as Rob Drummond, Adam Watt and Andy Houston distributed the ball well to willing receivers like Kieran Murray, Hamish White, Ross Marr, Ryan Galloway and Kieran Owens.

Team: Ashley Popowicz, Jamie Caldwell, Lucas McCallum, Scott Grierson, Wallace Finlay , Kieran Makin, Jamie Drummond, Adam Watt, Rob Drummond, Andy Houston, Hamish White, Ross Marr, Owen Young, Kieran Owens, Ryan Galloway and Kieran Murray.
