Lung bursting runs, pin point passes and last ditch tackles were all on show as Cumnock visited neighbours Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Report by Morton Houston

The weather was cold but fine as spectators were served up a treat of attacking rugby by all the players involved.

Kilmarnock went into the game a few players short but willing Cumnock volunteers stepped forward to even up the sides. The volunteers enthusiastically gave their all against their own team and ran in 4 tries for Killie in the process.

The first quarter was a close run affair with Cumnock shading it thanks to tries from Rob Drummond, Kieran Murray and Andy Houston. However it was Cumnock powerhouse Wallace Findlay who caught the eye as he rampaged around the paddock causing chaos in the Killie defence.

The second quarter saw the game tighten up as Killie claimed a couple of scores which were replied to by Owen Young and Andy Houston from Cumnock. Cumnock seemed to lose their way a wee bit and could probably be accused of being a bit too greedy with the ball resulting in some missed opportunities.

In the third quarter Cumnock claimed 3 more scores thanks to Rob Drummond, Andy Houston and Owen Young. Killie replied with 2 tries one of which was scored by Adam Watt. The highlights of this half were 2 amazing tackles. The first followed an end to end move which saw Rob Drummond break away and set to score. From no where Adam “Killa” Watt, playing for Kilmarnock , appeared to chase him down. He seemed to have no chance as he dived despairingly, however he had other ideas and he executed a perfect tap tackle to send his buddy tumbling to the ground. As if taking inspiration Drummond then executed the most perfect bone crunching tackle on Ross Marr as he seemed certain to score for Kilmarnock . Both boys got to their feet with big smiles.

In the last quarter Cumnock played their best rugby as powerful forwards Jamie Drummond and Wallace Findlay burst through before off loading to support players. Tries came from Drummond, Owens and Watt. However the Cumnock play was not restricted to their own team and Lucas McCallum, playing for Killie, sprinted through for a score whilst Andy Houston claimed his 4th and 5th tries of the game. This left the final score 11-8 for Cumnock.

Coach Alan Hill commented, “The performance of the Cumnock team today was pretty good. Once they started to look to move the ball about the started to look really effective. They have worked hard in training and this is showing in their improved performances.”

Next week Cumnock train at 6pm on Tuesday and Thursday nights outside at Cumnock Rugby Club. On Sunday they play away at Dalziel please see website and coaches texts for details.
