In a thrilling encounter at Broomfield Cumnock took on a slick and committed Marr team that had given them a 7 try to 1 rugby lesson in the previous season.

Report by Morton Houston

This however was no one way affair with Cumnock giving as good as the got and being in with a chance right up to the death.

Both teams had obviously come to play rugby and there were some fantastic phases of play from all concerned. Cumnock scored 5 tries and could easily have had 5 more but for some tenacious Marr defence and some bad decisions.

Cumnock’s forwards were in great form and all of them stepped up to the mark. Ashley Popowicz, Jamie Drummond and Lucas McCallum ran around the field like a herd of rampaging bulls and they caused Marr all sorts of problems. Scott Grierson, Jamie Caldwell and Matt Montgomerie were always on hand to win ball and link in moves while man of the match Wallace Finlay played like a man possessed as he made line break after line break.

In the backs Robb Drummond and Andy Houston distributed well in mid field and made some try saving tackles and darting breaks. Adam “Killa” Watt seemed to have discovered the secret of perpetual motion as ran, dodged and bounced about the park to great effect. There were some great runs nearly resulting in tries from Kieran Murray, Ross Marr, Evan Smith and Kieran Owens whilst new boy Hamish White played a blinder on the wing.

The tries were all from the top drawer and these were scored by Matt Montgomerie, Andy Houston, Wallace Findlay and Jamie Drummond (2). Findlay and Marr also shared 4 conversions between them.

Coach Alan Hill was delighted with the improvement in the team, “It is very heartening to see how much the boys have improved since last year’s defeat. They played well and with a lot of heart. They are by no means the finished article and the coaching team can see a lot of improvements that can still be made. I thought Wallace Findlay had his best game for Cumnock and seemed to really thrive on being made Vice Captain for the day.”

Cumnock S1’s are looking for more new players to increase their squad size. Anyone wanting to play should come along to training at Cumnock RFC on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30pm. New players don’t need to have previous experience, this is a great group of boys and new players will be very welcome.

Next Week

The S1 and S2 teams will be playing at Whitecraigs next week. Meet times are provisionally 11am at Cumnock Rugby Club or 12 noon at Whitecraigs. One yellow bus will be provided but parent’s cars will also be needed.
