Cumnock S1 come up short on trip to Biggar

Only eight players made the trip through to Biggar and things didn't bode well when hooker Robbie McLaren was injured in the warm up. Biggar kindly made up the numbers and the game started with 10 a side on a full size pitch, reducing to 9-a-side when scrum-half Aiden Kerr limped off with a groin strain early in the first period.

Biggar ran in three tries without reply in the first ten minutes of the game, mostly due to handling errors and missed tackles from the Cumnock players. Mid-way through the period however, Cumnock did manage to turn over a ruck allowing Callan Gordon to pick and race through for a score, converted by Jack Reilly. This lifted the spirits but Biggar then ran in three more tries before the break.

In the second period Biggar swapped their players about and a more evenly balanced contest ensued. The ever alert Callan Gordon scored early on then Andrew Harkiss ran in from 50 metres to score between the posts. Biggar replied with a fine move from the front of a line out before Cumnock scored again, Jack Reilly picking up from the back of a scrum and going on his own on the blind-side, then converting his own score. Biggar managed another try before the next break.

Another reshuffling of the teams took place during the final break and the last period resembled the first period. Cumnock scored first, Gregor Aitken intercepting a pass near the Biggar 10 metre line and sprinting upfield to score between the posts, with Reilly converting to maintain his 100% record for the day. After that though the team ran out of steam and Biggar ran in six tries before the final whistle.

Cumnock did create chances during this game but the continual changing of players robbed the team of any continuity. There were a number of uncharecterstic handling errors and some poor tackling so the players know what to expect at training on Thursday night. Man of the match was awarded to Andre Harkiss, not just for his excellent score but also for suggesting that the bus stopped at the excellent ice-cream shop in Biggar before heading back to Cumnock.
