Cumnock New S1 22 Uddingston 10

Moving from 10 aside on half a pitch to 13 a side on a full pitch was a big step for the players but one which they showed they were well able to take. This was a typical advert for summer rugby with steady rain and cool temperatures. The rugby however was anything but luke warm.

Playing 3 15 minutes sessions Cumnock looked the likelier team as they maintained steady pressure on the Uddingston line. An early score for Adam “Killa” Watt saw Cumnock of the mark however a long range break away from Uddy drew the team level. In the second session Cumnock again looked very lively and they scored a beautiful try as Andy Houston rocketed out a spin pass which Jamie Caldwell latched onto to stroll over the line. A second from livewire Watt and a first from Jamie Drummond were answered by 2 more from Uddy. Highlight of this session was a smashing line break followed by a 30 metre sprint by Lucus McCallum. Only a last second tackle by Uddy prevented what looked like a certain score.

In the last session Cumnock started to become more fluent with incisive runs from Captain Rob Drummond, Owen Young and debutant speedster Hamish White. Watt rounded off his hat trick and Jamie Drummond notched up a second before Andy Houston finished by scoring the 7th.

Coach Alan Hill commented, “This was a really promising display especially considering this was Cumnock’s first outing on a full size pitch. There were some terrific tries and passages of play. However there are also many areas we can improve on so we should see some bigger steps forward over the next year.”

Cumnock S1s (S1 in the academy next year) will train from 6:30 – 8pm every Thursday at Cumnock RFC through the summer. This is an ideal time for new players to start and any who fancy giving rugby a try should come along or call Morton Houston on 07794 899515.
