Both teams had weakened squads but they still managed to serve up a really competitive game filled with tries and excitement.
Cumnock played with a lot more determination than in some recent games and their tackling and rucking was noticeably better. In particular Matt Montgomery and Jamie Caldwell stood out and seemed to be constantly involved in the action. Calum McClownie also caught the eye as he played in the unfamiliar position of centre where his strong tackling played a big part in the Cumnock victory. Tries came from Jamie Drummond (2), and one each from Adam Watt, Kieran Owens, Jamie Caldwell, Zack Donald and Andy Houston. Owen Young added 4 conversions to make the final score 25 – 7.
Coach Alan Montgomery commented that, “The score line probably looks more comfortable than the actual game. West played well and our boys had to raise their game to gain a win. I was really pleased with how the boys played. The tackling in the backs was very good and drift defence worked well. The forwards were led well by Jamie Drummond and they competed well at the breakdown.”
Next week Cumnock S1 and S2s are away to Livingstone tournament. Details to follow through the week. Training is on at Broomfield from 6:30 on Tuesday and Thursday.
