Micros vs Lenzie (away)
Small micros squad have a great day in the sunshine
On a sunny Bank Holiday Sunday, Cumnock Cougars were warmly welcomed by Lenzie, with spectators being lucky enough to bask in the glorious weather whilst watching some fantastic rugby! The home side always field a mixed micro’s team of P1 - 3’s, so the Cougars took a small squad 10 plucky players, mostly primary 1’s & 2’s, for their final match of the season. On such a warm day, the decision was made to play three 8 minute games, giving the kids plenty of time to keep suitably hydrated.
In the first game, both teams experimented by playing 10-a-side on a large pitch, with each team setting out their stall for the day. Right from the off, Cumnock and Lenzie went at it hammer and tongs, with the game raging back and forth. Both sides proved themselves to be equally matched despite Lenzie fielding more primary 3’s, with neither team able to force the lead. Playing with a “6 touch-turnover” rule, both defensive lines stood fast, with the game ending in a highly entertaining 0-0 draw.
In the second match of the day, both teams reverted back to a more traditional 7-a-side set up, allowing more space for the players to exploit. As the Cougars pushed forward, Paul and Stuart proved to be a continual thorn in the side of the opposition, with some blistering mazy runs testing the Lenzie defence. Some great teamwork and all round support play then led to Cumnock taking the lead with 2 fantastic tries from Paul and Stuart, before Lenzie fought their way back into the game, eventually equalising. In the final minutes, Cumnock’s defence proved to be impressive, with Logan and Adam launching into some vital tackles to stem the Lenzie attack. As the Cougars fought on, Adam broke away down the wing, only to be halted yards from the opposition try line. As the Cumnock fans held their breath, Adam popped a great quick pass to an incoming Matthew, allowing him to crash over the line and score the winner, with the last play of the game. An exhilarating 3-2 victory for Cumnock was well received, with both sets of fans applauding each team.
In the final match, both sides kept up the high tempo as the midday heat grew warmer. Again, the Cougars and Lenzie both appeared evenly matched and battled for possession of every loose ball. Matthew hounded the opposition as relentlessly as ever, whilst Stuart and Paul continued to make probing attacks. The younger players, such as Adam, Riley, Ruraidh and Tilly, fared well against a mainly older Lenzie side, whilst Aaron and Finlay provided some much needed support, with Logan acting as the defensive lynchpin. Lenzie managed to break away with 2 tries, before the Cougars managed to claw one back with a well worked try from Adam. As Cumnock pushed on for an equaliser, a blip in their concentration levels allowed the hosts to waltz through unchallenged from a quick restart, to take a deserved 3-1 win.
All in all, it was another impressive display from a young Cumnock side, with the kids clearly loving their rugby. Overall, the team has come on leaps and bounds over the season, and the coaches are all extremely proud of them and everything that they have achieved. Can’t wait for what the next season will bring!
