P1/2 narrowly miss out on another tournament win
Black team report:
The Cougar Cubs had a huge primary 1 & 2 squad for their home tournament today & were able to field 3 teams, Cumnock Black, White & Red.
Cumnock Black team went into their home tournament with confidence, after two successive tournament wins at Strathaven and East Kilbride.
First up was a well drilled East Kilbride P2 side who were out for revenge for two defeats at the hands of the Blacks in the last two weeks. Cumnock Black team started very slowly losing a try in the first attack and it took them time to get into their game. Tries for the Blacks from Mason and Ryan were added but East Kilbride rattled in another 3 tries to deservedly come out on top 4-2 to end the Blacks’ winning streak.
Cumnock Cougar Cubs Blacks then played a good Lenzie team in their second game. Improvements were made on the first game scoring early through Lewis. The defence was much better in the second game but Lenzie manage to breach it and levelled at 1-1. Cumnock’s defence stood solid with two 6 touch turnovers, they dug in and got their rewards when Ryan went over to take a 2-1 victory.
Game 3 saw them up against their teammates in Cumnock Whites. The Blacks took the lead through Paul blazing up the wing to score. The Whites hit back to level, but strong defence from the Blacks saw them limit the Whites to just the one score. Tries added by Lewis and Matthew gave the Blacks a 3-1 win.
Game 4, also against teammates in Cumnock Reds was a great exciting game of rugby with 10 tries! The Reds were in front early through Mason but with two tries from Lewis, the Blacks levelled at 2-2. Some great rugby was played as the match raged back and forth. A further 6 tries were scored, with Ryan Freya and Paul crossing for the Black team, Mason & Adam for the Reds, making a final score of 5-5!
Iona, Angus and Tilly who are all P1s played really well for the Black team and gained vital experience playing with their P2 teammates.
All in all it was a good day for the Black team finishing runners up to East Kilbride who deservedly took the title. But all kids enjoyed their day and a lot of great rugby was played.
Red team report:
On a perfect day for rugby the Cougar Cubs Red team opened their tournament against a strong East Kilbride team who were high in confidence after beating our Black team.
The Reds were undaunted though & went toe to toe with their opponents. In attack the Reds looked for space & supported the ball carrier well, resulting in 3 tries for Mason who made expert use of his blistering pace. The Reds worked hard in defence to deny East Kilbride space but were caught a bit narrow on a few occasions, East Kilbride exploiting the space ruthlessly to score 3 tries of their own. The game finished as a 3-3 draw, making the Reds the only side in the tournament that didn't lose to the eventual winners.
In their second game the Reds took on Lenzie. The attacks were very much in charge in this game. Mason scored all 5 tries for the Reds although all were real team efforts. The pick of them came after a fantastic break by Ewan who, after being caught, passed beautifully to the on-rushing Mason. Riley, Logan & Finlay all found holes in the porous Lenzie defence to make good breaks. Unfortunately for the Reds their defence was equally porous, Lenzie deservedly scoring 5 tries of their own, the equaliser with the last play of the match.
The Reds' third match was an all Cumnock affair against the White team. In a hotly contested encounter play raged from end to end with the Reds scoring tries through Angus, Riley & Logan. Maddy was unlucky not to add a fourth try when she touched down short of the line after a good break.
In defence the Reds worked hard with Maddy & Riley showing prominently while Blair patrolled the midfield with menace.
With the game finely poised at 3-3 as the end approached, the White team nipped in with the winning score after a long passage of play.
Ending the tournament with 3 draws & a narrow defeat, the Reds can be very proud of their efforts. The team worked really hard together to be highly competitive in every match scoring some cracking tries through incisive attacking & also showing great commitment & at times discipline in defence.
White team report:
The Whites first game of the day was against Lenzie. They had come a long way and were keen to get started. They started the match and Cuinn was right up their putting in the first tackle. Lenzie saw we had a few gaps in our defence and managed to put a score in the corner. The Cumnock Whites woke up, put the pressure on and picked up the pace. John and Adam were right up at the front managing to stop Lenzie for a little while before they scored another try. Then out of the blue Aaron saw his chance and ran like the wind to score in the corner. Tilly and Ava put in good defensive play which allowed John to score a try! All the Whites had stepped up and put in a very good performance, but unfortunately on the day Lenzie were the better team. Score: Cumnock Whites 2 - Lenzie 4
The second game was against the feisty East Kilbride. John called his team to line up and with no time to rest the Whites were back on the pitch. After a wee pep talk, they were determined not to let the opposition through just as easily. The tempo of this match was fast. The Whites worked very hard. Adam was short of a foot to score a tremendous try. The support was there and John scored another. Ruaridh was setting up the ball and Lewis came in at the right time to score a try for the White team. Our White team had learned from the last game and put in a tremendous defensive display against a very strong East Kilbride team. Score: Cumnock White 2 – East Kilbride 6
P1/2 squad: Aaron, Adam, Angus, Ava, Blair, Cuinn, Ewan, Finlay, Freya, Iona, John, Lewis, Logan, Maddy, Mason, Matthew, Paul, Riley, Ruaridh, Ryan, Tilly
