P2 at East Kilbride Tournament
P2s continue fantastic form
This week the Cumnock Cougars Cubs P2 side made their way to East Kilbride to take part in their annual tournament. Again with strong numbers Cumnock managed to field 2 teams, Black & Red.
The Black team fresh from their tournament victory last week at Strathaven lined up against the host side East Kilbride in a rematch of last weekend’s final. From the off the Blacks, captained by Ryan, went at the opposition with ferocious pace. This seemed to be the theme for the day. Some impressive attacking play saw Cumnock stretch into a 3-0 lead with tries from Ryan, Paul and Mason. A fourth try was soon on the cards with a darting run by Freya up the touchline finishing off a flowing move by Cumnock. Some dogged defending by Lewis and Matthew kept the hosts at bay with 2 further tries added by Paul and Ryan saw the Cumnock Blacks run out 6-0 winners in their opening match.
The second game was against Linlithgow. Again the Blacks lined up in their now familiar defensive line approach with Matthew and Ryan bossing the lines and Mason, Lewis, Freya and Paul driving the opposition team deep into their own half. Though some brilliant defensive work the Cumnock Blacks got their rewards with some fine side-stepping by Lewis piercing the opposition defence to get over the line. Further tries were added through Mason, Ryan and Matthew seeing the Cumnock side run out 4-1 winners.
The 3rd and final match was against Strathaven. With another tournament win in sight the Cumnock side flew up the pitch from the opening play resulting in a try for Mason. The Blacks were well in their stride by this point and were playing fast, flowing rugby. Further tries by Paul, Lewis(2) and Ryan saw the Blacks run out 5-1 winners and saw them, for the second week in a row collect the prize as tournament winners.
The Cougar Cubs Black team for the second week running have displayed an incredible style of fast paced rugby once again. The fact that every team member scored reflecting that it was a whole team effort. This, combined with some punishing defensive work has simply left the coaching staff beaming with pride.
From the coaches and the parents, well done Cumnock, a well-deserved tournament victory.
Black team - Freya, Lewis, Mason, Mathew, Paul and Ryan.
The Cougar Cubs Red team were very keen to get going!
Our first game was against Linlithgow. Cuinn, Aaron, and Logan worked very hard to find gaps in Linlithgow’s defence with Finlay, Ava and Ewan providing support as they moved up the pitch. Linglithgow kept up the pressure and scored the first 2 tries. Cuinn was quick to line up her team and try again to take the ball to the try line. The Reds defence improved in the second half and despite a hard game they never gave up. They put in a tremendous effort, but unfortunately lost by one try. Final score: Cumnock Reds 3 – Linlithgow 4.
The second match was against East Kilbride and playing against the hosts was always going to be tricky. The Reds did not have any time to rest between matches so with tired legs, and the sun beating down, they got stuck into the hosts. Aaron, Cuinn and Logan made some good runs almost resulting in a try, but the East Kilbride defence managed to stop them. The Reds put into play some new defence skills picked up in recent training sessions to defend their try line. Ewan and Logan put in some brilliant tackles with Ava right there to help them. Final score: Cumnock Reds 0 – East Kilbride 3.
The third match was against Linlithgow’s mix of P1/2’s. The Reds had had a good break, and time to refuel for their last match of the day. Learning from their mistakes in the previous games the Reds were hungry for victory. This time we needed an extra player from the Black team to make up the numbers. Cuinn set up the ball and with Matthew right behind her and they scored the first try of the game, this put a smile on everyone’s faces. Our defence was strong with Linlithgow struggling to take too many points. Hunger for a win and putting into practice some tactical play started to yield results for the Reds, with a run of try scoring. Final score: Cumnock Reds 5 - Linlithgow 4.
The Cougar Cubs Red team can be well satisfied with their day, acquitting themselves very well against 3 strong teams and being highly competitive throughout. The squad continue to develop really well & thoroughly deserved their medals.
Red team – Aaron, Ava, Cuinn, Ewan, Finlay, Logan
