Amazing Teamwork Shines Through In The Ayrshire Derby

Cumnock Cougars P4 team travelled to Marr Rugby Club in Troon for their first game of 2019 on a very cold and wet winters day. The team treated parents, coaches and spectators to another action-packed morning of rugby. Cumnock played two 7 a side games of 14 minutes against two Marr teams and coming home once again the undefeated winners!
The first game was against Marr A team and in the first half Cumnock started off in a bit of a daze! It became apparent that the Marr team were an accomplished team by starting the game at a quick pace scoring a try in the first few minutes. Cumnock knew they had to wake up and step up the pace if they had any chance of winning their first game of 2019 and that is what they did. Alfie scored a superb hat trick along with Kyran getting on the score sheet before half time. With the cobwebs well and truly blown away the second half began at a fast pace with Alfie throwing a long looping pass out wide before he even got tackled into the hands of Ross who ran easily across the line with no Marr defence in sight. Our defence had woken up and Cumnock were all over Marr like a rash with Jake and Euan smashing the opposition with some fantastic tackles resulting in some dropped balls and with Adam a few times pouncing on the ball and making a speedy dash up the wing. With tackles in full force now Euan took the opportunity to pick up a dropped ball and charging straight through the defenders towards the try line resulting in a fantastic try. Kyran was next to give a full-blown tackle resulting in the defender being brought to the ground and the ball rolling out of his hand to allow Aaron to pounce on it and do one of his trademark sprints all the way up the wing to score his first try of the game. This was soon followed by another 2 tries from Aaron and a try from Alfie. The game finished with an excellent pass out wide from Ross into the hands of Jake who weaved himself in and out of the defenders over the try line. On only 3 occasions were our hosts able to slip the Cougars fierce traps and score themselves.

Final Score: Marr 3 – Cumnock 8

The second game was against Marr B team in which Cumnock started on fine form with an extremely fast tempo from the outset which the opposition simply could not cope with. Kyran using his well-known power to drive through the oppositions defence resulting in a try put Cumnock quickly on the score sheet. Aaron was on fire as well and doing what he does best using his blistering pace and running the full length of the pitch on many occasions resulting in an amazing 7 tries adding to the score sheet. Ross soon got himself onto the score sheet after picking up a loose ball which had resulted from Jake doing his well-known tackle of smashing into the defenders at full speed and giving them no chance to stay on their feet. Time and time again Alfie, Euan, Ross and Kyran could be seen charging forward not only with the ball in hand over and over but also to bring down the attacking defence, sometimes with such force that their opponents were laying on the ground! Each time we were pressed by the attackers they were able to stop the onslaught and at times turn it over to our attack. Alfie added another try to the score sheet after a fantastic interception of the ball and a fast sprint up the wing and flying over the try line. Jake again ended the game with a fantastic try resulting from a quick pop up off the ball from Adam. Fantastic tackles, quick thinking passing and constant support for the ball carrier resulted in a tremendous result of 11 tries to Cumnock and 0 tries to Marr.

Final Score: Marr 0 Cumnock 11

The teamwork on display today really should be commended. It is very apparent that the boys have listened to the coaches throughout their training sessions that rugby is a team game and working as a team will result in scoring more tries and this is exactly what happened today!
