Cougar Cubs Pounce On The Bonny Banks

This week Cumnocks P4 Cubs took the high road up the coast to Loch Lomond RFC with games against the home side and also Helensburgh and Stirling County.

Match 1 was against Stirling County who brought the game to us from the off but the Cumnock defence proved that it was a lot tighter than the expansive pitch that laid before them. Stirling brought the ball over the game line time and again but the muscle men from Ayrshire tackled their way through the pressure and once again with the attacking defence that has proven to be the lynchpin of the season so far working so well again today. First blood of the day came from Jake who opened the game up and showed our opponents we weren't just there to attend. Following on from there we had another from Jake, 2 from Alfie and 1 from Aaron in the first half alone. Our opponents ended the first half 5 nil down and with the 2nd half starting quickly after the first had finished the Cumnock players were able to really switch it on and run through the defence all over the huge pitch. Now the game really hit top gear with Cumnock scoring another 6 through a single from Kyran, Ross and Aaron and a triple from Alfie. Cumnock really showed their skill and sidestepped and tackled their way to a fantastic attacking win with only dropping one try in the closing seconds of the game. From the restarts
Stuart showed that he was pressing hard on the County players with a constant presence in the face of the ball carrier and bringing tackle on tackle down upon them.

Final Score: Cumnock 11 - 1 Stirling County

Match 2 was against local side Helensburgh. The opposing boys and girls showed that they had been working well on their passing drills and their offloads were working to great effect but once again the Cumnock disruptors got in amongst them and showed how we have not only been working on our passing drills but our tackling has been coming on form even more. All through the first half Cumnock pushed Helensburgh back further showing a stalking defence that even the local submariners would have been proud of. Alfie picked up another hat trick with Aaron scoring a double and Jake bringing in a single. This put Cumnock 6 up but the Helensburgh team scored well right at the end of the half to bring the lead back to 5. The 2nd half showed that the Cougar Cubs just keep coming no matter how well you are playing and the Helensburgh players were pushed back beyond their own try line at times and were apprehensive at keeping possession knowing that someone wearing red and black would soon be bearing down upon them. Some fantastic intercepts came through from Alfie who sidestepped his way to a further 2 and Jake worked through some fantastic tackles to pressure the opponents into spilling the ball and also scoring another try. Kyran went through and added another to his scoreline with an amazing show on how to avoid being tackled hard by running right through the defenders. Ross bagged a double right at the end with his twists and turns proving too much for anyone trying to stop him with the flash of his feet and marshalling of his team showing that he was in good command of the entire game.

Final Score: Cumnock 12 - 1 Helensburgh

The final match was against our hosts for the day, Loch Lomond. The Cougars really started the game how the last ended with tries coming thick and fast. Again Stuart was able to tackle his way into the game with scoring the first and third tries of the match soon after the opponents started with possession. Kyran brought himself through and worked a fantastic try in the corner so quick that not even he could believe that he had made the try line so fast. Jake continued his hard tackling game and was able to shock the Loch Lomond attackers into dropping their game and enabling him to bag another double. Alfie brought another hot footed try to the teams scoreline before the end of the half. The final half of the day started with Loch Lomond scoring a well worked try into the corner which brought the determination back with a bang from Cumnock as Stuart ran through scoring an excellent try with Aaron turning on the speed & scoring quickly after him to put the heads back down on our opponents. Our feisty Cougars showed that the pressure was unrelenting and as the possession was stripped from our opponents time and time again the defenders became the attackers each and every time. Alfie quick stepped another double along with Aaron being unreachable once again this weekend in terms of pure pace. Ross again added to his score with a fantastic run to the line and showing that from start to finish his day was spent working hard for his team mates and keeping the tries coming time after time. Aaron bagged another 2 in what was quickly becoming a try-fest for the red and black one of which coming from great vision after a dropped ball when he quickly saw the big space that had developed and ran straight into it. Stuart scored the final try of the game with the Loch Lomond defenders nipping at his heels.

Final Score: Cumnock 14 - 1 Loch Lomond

Great fun was had in the shadow of Ben Lomond with Cumnock being the victors of each match. An attacking defence was the defining factor on the day which allowed the Cumnock Cougars the chance to pounce on every ball and surge through with a Spartan-like onslaught of multiple tries coming from each and every player.

Team: Kyran, Alfie, Ross, Stuart, Jake & Aaron.
