Powerful matches all round prove a very close and tight day

This weeks matchday was forecasted to be a very tough and blustery day as we welcomed The West Of Scotland RFC and also Hamilton Bulls. We made sure that Storm Dennis had an afternoon invite and he turned up bang on time as we left the field of play. Both Red & Black Teams proved they could put in a great defence and attack against very difficult opponents.

Blacks Vs Hamilton Bulls:
Both teams started off very well with zig zag moves to make any team dizzy. It was end to end stuff but Kyran got the match off to a great start with a fantastic try to get us off the mark. We worked well together as a team and the passes were rolling through the hands thick and fast. Each time one of our young heroes were tackled the offload came through to the supporting player faster than Hamilton could recover. Our opponents were no slouch either and the fast-flowing action of the game was being shown from both sides. Danny slipped his way through the defence well and Stuart got a couple of strong tries but it was the marshalling of the defence that Adam K was able to make the difference with as he kept our side spread out and showed our opponents no space to be able to attack. We combined that with the pressure applied by Rudi and the tackling ability we brought gave us the win.

Score: Cumnock 13 – 10 Hamilton

Blacks Vs West Of Scotland Team 1:

As we rocked up onto the pitch for match number 2, we knew this would be a tough ask for our pokey wee Ayrshire side to mix it up with the power of Milngavie’s finest. However, mix it up we certainly did. Adam K marshalled his team well and as in the previous game was able to bring the tackles upon our opponents very well indeed. Dani put everything on the line and even though he was picking up the odd knock here and there he was able to battle hard and despite being offered a rest he declined and fought through for his team mates. As Kyran and Stuart put the hammer down and gave us the power to shock through the Wests defence it was most definitely a fantastic team performance once again. Alfie was showing everyone that he was on top form today and as ever was a real thorn in the side of our humbled opponents. Rudi spent the entire match badgering the Wests defence and managed to get a fantastic try where he put so much pressure on them, they dropped the ball behind the try line and he pounced with some perfectly controlled downward pressure that could teach our internationals a thing or two. A fantastic game for both sets of fans to watch.

Score: Cumnock 14 – 12 West Of Scotland

Blacks Vs West Of Scotland Team 2:

Match 3 came up thick and fast and we really did have to battle hard in this match. This one though really was one for the defence however as we played, we really showed our class in this matter. A very physical game was brought to us but we coped well with it and at one point our opponents had an extra payer on the field just be able to cope with it. This was a proper battle of the ages and both teams fought hard. Kyran picked up 3 strong tries with Alfie’s adventurous 6. Stuart, Rudi, Dani & Adam K facilitated each approach to the try line and let us all see what a true team game rugby can be as they fought hard for each other.

Score: Cumnock 9 – 9 West Of Scotland

Cumnock Reds v West of Scotland 2

Storm Dennis was no match for the Cougars on Sunday at Broomfield as they lined up to face tough opposition in West of Scotland 1 & 2 and Hamilton – sure to be tough games and indeed they were. Post team split the Cumnock Reds of Adam S, Calleigh, Cara, Daniel, Harvey and Ross were straight into battle against West 2 and a battle it was! It was clear from the start that this would be a tough fixture as West opened the scoring quickly with 2 tries. The Reds re-grouped and responded with 2 of their own, Calleigh crashing through after great work from Adam S – then Adam S breaking 2 tackles to make it level. Both teams traded tries for next period, Daniel fighting hard in the contest to cross for Reds with Ross blasting through after a great offload from Cara and Harvey twisting and turning to touch down in the corner. West however, were a strong team and their quick passing and attacking lines proved too much for the Reds with a narrow 14-10 loss.

Score: Cumnock 10 – 14 West Of Scotland

Cumnock Reds v West of Scotland 1

The Reds had a point to prove in this one and it turned out to be a belter. Reds tackling in this game was back against a big West side and the battle was fought tooth and nail in the middle of the park, every try scored in this game was hard fought, Ross having to take the long way through then around the West pack for his 2 in this game, Cara driving superbly through for her try and Daniel involved in every scrap, picking the ball up from contest and jinking his way over for 4 tries in this game! Harvey troubled West all game and a great pass from tackle to Adam S saw him sprint through too. Calleigh nursed a sore knee through this game but you wouldn’t have known it as again she battled through half the West team to score! West were keeping the scores level though and in the end – their big players just edged it by one try, a great performance from the Reds and proving again that no-one comes to Broomfield and gets an easy game!

Score: Cumnock 10 – 11 West Of Scotland
Overall Score: Cumnock 56 - 56 Opponents
Dream Team – Stuart, Alfie, Adam K, Dani, Kyran, Rudi, Adam S, Calleigh, Cara, Daniel, Harvey and Ross
