Enthralling Physical Performance To Dust Of The Frost

This week we had our first fixture of the 2020 part of the season against Marr RFC. This was due to be an away fixture however due to the recent weather Marr notified us that their pitches were not fit for play. Ever the gracious hosts that we are we offered to move the fixture to or amazing facility at Fortress Broomfield where the P4s stepped up to conduct the catering duties. As the frosty cobwebs were being dusted off from our mid-season break the pitches began to thaw out also. This allowed us to get back to what both teams thrive on. Contact Rugby! Our Red & Black Teams worked super hard and brought the thunder that we are well known for across the region.

Black Team: Harvey, Alfie, Euan, Jack, Stuart, Aaron & Dani.

Match 1 Cumnock 11 – 8 Marr

Our first game is always a very exciting match and today didn’t disappoint with the Black Team being able to tackle hard and press our advantage each and every time the opportunity arose. The wet pitch was a little slippery under our feet but the pressure we put on our great visitors could be seen from all of our amazing Cougars. This then allowed great scrambling from Dani and Jack and ball carrying with superb offloading by Stuart, Alfie and Aaron to be the story of this match. Harvey was proving difficult and far too light on his feet for Marr to get to grips with and Euan as always was showing not only do we run around their defence but also route 1 to the try line is a massive strength of ours also. Great tries coming from all over pitch with fantastic lines through and around the Marr team.

Match 2 Cumnock 11 – 13 Marr

In our 2nd match of the day we played against what was clearly Marrs first team who were a very physical and very well drilled side. This was an extremely hard-fought match from both teams and once again Broomfield did not disappoint in providing us with great excitement. The story of this match was a staunch defence and quick hard tackling. This game was much closer and by the end of the match both teams were well and truly battle hardened. After both teams had a quick chat on player safety and having a fun filled day that was exactly how we finished. Tries in this match were coming thick and fast. However, it was the defence, ball carrying & support from every single player that made the difference. Once the tackle technique was a bit more dialled in it really was a fantastic match.

Black Team Overall Score: Cumnock 22 – 21 Marr

Red Team: Adam S, Adam K, Kyran, Cara, Daniel & Ross.

Match 1 Cumnock 8 – 11 Marr

First game back and straight in at the deep end against old rivals Marr – always very hard-fought games and today was no different, with pitches thawed out nicely it was on for full contact at Fortress Broomfield. The Reds team lost teammate and top tackler Jake in the warm-up to a fall. Get well soon Jake! First game up and Cumnock Reds got off to a slowish start as Marr started confidently sticking a couple of tries over before Cumnock had shook off the Christmas holidays, after that the game was tough but evenly matched, Kyran’s drives proving hard for Marr to deal with and support was strong from Daniel, Cara and Adam K with pace on outside from Ross and Adam S and they went toe to toe and try to try with Marr. Marr won out on tackling side though and their fast start secured them the win in the first game.

Match 2 Cumnock 15 – 14 Marr

Straight into Game 2 and what can only be described as an epic, bruising encounter on both sides. Two strong early drives from Cara with excellent offloads leading to first of 3 twisting turning tries from Adam S with Ross’s hop-skip-sidestep runs slicing Marr in all directions it was a close-run thing. Daniel was quickly on every loose or dropped ball with some great pick-ups in this game and with Adam K battling through tackle holds left right and centre it remained a tense affair – Kyran bursting through twice in his trademark style leaving space to be exploited by the pacey Reds on the wing with Adam K weaving his way to the corner and across the try line and Daniel crossing 3 times in this game. Tackling on both sides was loose and tempers rising - leading to a high scoring game with the Cumnock Reds edging it in the final second to win.

Red Team Overall Score: Cumnock 23 – 25 Marr

Cumnock Cougar P5s train on a Thursday night at our all-weather pitches at Broomfield. We are always looking for new players and hopeful you can join us soon.

Overall Score: Cumnock 45 – 46 Marr
