Ayrshire Derby Wows The Fans

This weeks fixture was against a very large squad of Ardrossan Accies. We were very warmly welcomed by our opponents on a dull and overcast Sunday morning and with an 11 strong player team we were able to field both a red and black team with thanks to Ardrossan donating a very good player to play alongside the blacks. A great big thank you to Daryl for joining the Cougars for the day and puting in a stellar performance.

RED TEAM

Match 1:
Jake had the honour of leading his team out as Captain in this weeks fixture. Throughout the entire day he was seen bringing down the attackers and forcing the opposition to drop the ball. Euan kept on and on using his power to drive forward and each time he did our opponents were left wanting with steps that left everyone in his wake. Daniel showed how he only needs to be given a glimpse of space and he was gone before the defenders could get close to him. Adam K as always battled hard and put every challenger back in their place and kept the pressure on all the time. Cara battled hard throughout and kept applying the pressure time and again. As she hit the ground running on one of the restarts she spotted the space and took off down the line to score an amazing try with her infectious beaming smile each time she had the ball she really did set the tone for how we all strive to have as much fun in Mini rugby as we can.

Score: Cumnock 15 - 13 Ardrossan (1)

Match 2:
We were forced back at the kick off by our strong attacking opponents and even had to break out from behind our own try line to get into the game but through the pressure applied great teamwork and offloads we fought hard to go the full length of the pitch and score. This match really was end to end and a constant battle for each team. Euan brought his usual engaging attack and defence and when he made his mark early on it was evident that he had brought some knew tricks to his trade. Adam K stepped up the tempo each time he was on the ball and left his defenders completly in his dust with his all knew skips and leaps that had our opponents wondering where he was going next. Stuart worked hard in the tackle and won a lot of 50/50 scrambles and charged forward with intent each time battling hard to break through. His leg drives in the tackle were a thing of beauty and very rarely was he brought down but always supplied a good offload in the tackle. Again Jakes amazing tackling performance brought the game into our clutches and he really switched it on with his tries. Each time Accies moved forward he was on them bringing their legs into his tight grasp. Daniel worked for every ball and turned on the pace to bring the close game home.

Score: Cumnock 10 - 9 Ardrossan (2)

Match 3:
In this game our young heroes really got into their stride and opened up the taps. Each and every player turned on the charm and worked very hard in every play. From Caras charging dashes through the defenders, Stuart's hard fought yards, Jake's smashing tackles, Euans side steps, Daniel's speed to Adam K's skips and leaps. The entire team were working together and passing the ball superbly. It was a great match all round and showed how the young Cubs are progressing every week.

Score Cumnock 9 - 5 Ardrossan (3)

BLACK TEAM

Match 1:
It was clear from the off that this was a well balanced Cougars side with Kyran grabbing the first try in his inimitable style (straight through the middle looking fierce!) but this was a VERY close game as Ardrossan moved the ball about incredibly well avoiding the contact and their passes were flowing. It was clear that pace was going to be key to beat this team and that’s what Cougars produced with Ross racing through with Alfie and Adam S jinking their way to the try line regularly and proving just too fleet of foot for Ardrossan.

Score: Cumnock 10 - 8 Ardrossan (2)

Match 2:
The Cougars were really settling into their rhythm for this one with Alfie and Adam S trading tries with snaky confident runs and some smart offloads from Danny and our guest Darryl proving too hard for Ardrossan to deal with and Danny fought his way over strongly in second half to grab his first of a handful of tries today, with every player in the team scoring in this game. Strong tackling from Ross and Kyran kept Ardrossan score low and it finished for Cumnock with teamwork having been the name of the game in this win.

Score Cumnock 13 - 4 Ardrossan (3)

Match 3:
Last up and a slightly jaded Cumnock team faced an Ardrossan team who were full of beans. Cumnocks tackling in the first half was slightly off as again Ardrossan moved ball about well but again smart offloads and the pace of Cumnock did the damage first half with Danny, Alfie and Ross combining well and hitting the try line regularly. In the second half Ardrossan really upped their game and the Cumnock defence was really stretched with the whole team defending on the try line and with Ardrossan exploiting the wide areas regularly, Cumnock were having to use their incredible pace to defend – but in the end the cushion from the first half and 4 strong tries from Kyran and Adam S either side of half time kept Cumnock ahead.

Score: Cumnock 12 - 8 Ardrossan (1)

6 testing games from a very disciplined and professional Ardrossan but Cumnock’s away form is proving hard for teams to deal with and they roared their way to 6 good wins.

Overall Score: Cumnock Win 69 - 47

Dream Team:
Stuart, Alfie, Euan, Daniel, Danny, Adam S, Ross, Kyran, Adam K, Jake, Cara.
