P5s entertain West and Hamilton

On a particularly driech day, West of Scotland and Hamilton joined us on our new pitches and along with our Cumnock P5s provided a fantastic morning of rugby. As some of our P5 players are still absent due to illness or holidays two of our more experienced P4s joined us to boast our numbers.

Our first match was Cumnock vs West of Scotland. The first half saw some good runs however lacked tackling therefore at half time both teams were tied at 4 tries. During the second half of the game, characteristically, the boys upped their game. Kenzie and John demonstrated some fantastic runs while Jack used his size to exploit some small holes in the opposition’s defense. Although the second half also lacked tackling on Cumnock’s behalf, they demonstrated some good passing and support play. The game finished on Cumnock 7, West of Scotland 9 with 4 tries from Jack, 2 from John and another from Tony

West of Scotland brought enough players that they could field two teams, therefore Cumnock faced West of Scotland again in their second match. After sizing them up in the previous match, Cumnock knew this time they had to be switched on from the start. Throughout both halves Cumnock’s jinky runners weaved their way through West’s defense towards the try line and by increasing their tackles Cumnock were also managing on occasion to turn the ball over. After an enjoyable game of rugby to watch, the game finished on Cumnock 11, West of Scotland 9 with 6 tries from Kenzie, 3 from Aaron M and tries from Tony and Ellie.

Cumnock met Hamilton for their third and final match of the day. Although Hamilton looked like an organised team who had been practicing some signature moves, Cumnock showed them what they were made of. In addition to the usual suspect streaking up the park, evading the opposition and scoring tries, Ellie also found her feet. Not only was she finding space and gaining ground, Ellie was showing us this is not a game just for boys. She handled herself well in tackles and went on to score 3 tries in the first half. Ellie wasn’t the only one who was impressive and stepping out her comfort zone. While everyone was now tackling, Kenzie and John really upped their game and along with Jack, Tony and Aaron M they piled the pressure on Hamilton’s attack and repeatedly turned the ball over. After gaining an impressive 5 point lead in the first half Cumnock went on to win the match, Cumnock 16, Hamilton 9 with tries from Kenzie, 4, Ellie, 3, Aaron M 4, Tony, 2 and Jack, 3. 9t
