The Home challenge

8 Cumnock Cougar Warriors braved the very cold and frosty but sunny Sunday morning, to give a warm welcome to Lenzie P5 team for a game of rugby at Netherthird playing fields.
With only one team for the p5 cougars in this fixture today it was decided to play a game in 3 10 min sections. Today Cumnock p5s welcomed two new players to the team in their first game, Ellie and Nathan. The team had extra responsibility in todays game by keeping the new players on track.

As soon as the ball kicked off in the first 3rd Cumnock did not hesitate on a speedy attack when John shot through the Lenzie defence and scoring the first try of the day. Lenzie woke up on the returning attack by pulling the Cumnock defence all over the pitch, but with a fumble for the ball Cumnock gained possession and put pressure on their opponent’s defence and making it over the try line for a second try. This time on attack Lenzie pushed back the Cumnock defence and broke through for a try. With the cougars on a slow start at tackling the first third was pretty much try for try. Seeing excellent runs and some slick stepping skills from the cougars in the first 10 mins. With tackling needing to improve in the Cougars game a team talk was focused around this by coaches.

Onto the second 3rd of the game, like the first part of the game, trys were scored pretty much evenly by both sides. Although Cumnock tackling had stepped up a little stopping their bigger oppents proved to be a bit of a challenge. Lenzie was quick to act after each Cumnock try taking advantage of Cumnocks slow defensive restarts. With some great attacking skills from Cumnock. Running into space, good stepping action and fast passing got them through a tight Lenzie defence. After this 10 minute third a team talk was needed to push the team back into a fast-defensive line after every try. This game was sure to be a tough one after 20 minutes tiredness was showing on the team. The score was sitting at 14 each.

The last 10 minutes of todays game both teams had played some great rugby today and giving the spectators a good show of skills.
The Cougars really stepped it up in this third of the game. With Cumnock starting off the last 10 minutes on the attack again the game was more or less try for try. The team talk had worked in the last third of the game with Lenzie pushing a fast attack after each Cumnock try they were met with an even faster Cumnock defence. This had an impact towards the end of the game. By putting the pressure on Lenzies attack Cumnock managed to slowly edge a 2 try lead over their opponents by winning possession more. Cumnocks style and skills did not change in the last 10 mins of the game it was a pleasure watching the quick stepping passing skills from the cougars. Ending a well fought and exhausting game of rugby with a close win 23-21.
And a huge well done to the new members of the p5 Cumnock Cougars Ellie and Nathan who enjoyed the game very much.
Coaches were proud of the teams performance against a well drilled and skillful Lenzie p5 side.

Try scorers of the day: Kenzie (6), Dylan (6) Aron (5) John (4) Tony (2)
