P5s knock it out the park at Loch Lomond

Cumnock P5s vs Loch Lomond and Helensburgh

Six very dedicated P5s travelled to the picturesque setting of Loch Lomond to play two 20-minute games against Loch Lomond and Helensburgh. First up was Loch Lomond vs Helensburgh and the boys were afforded the opportunity to size up their opponents. It was obvious this was going to be another tough week and the boys were going to have to dig deep.

Cumnock’s first match was against Helensburgh who had already demonstrated some excellent rugby. Our boys got off to a sleepy start with some clumsy ball handling but managed to finish the first half neck in neck with Helensburgh. A team talk certainly woke them up and in the second half they were transformed. First came an excellent run by Jack, dodging and weaving between the Helensburgh players who was then able to pass the ball to Dylan who was running in support and then sprinted up the field to score. Shortly after the restart the boys demonstrated some excellent tackling resulting in a loose ball which Dylan was able to pounce on securing it for Cumnock. With some excellent team work, he and Jack worked their way back up the field for another try. The whole team worked hard on their tackles and managed to frequently turn the ball over throughout the second half. Another play which stood out in their first match was a pass to Tony who then took off, spotting space and flying towards the try line. The Cumnock P5s knocked it out the park with a final score of Cumnock 9 vs Helensburgh 4 with two tries from Dylan, two tries from Jack, four tries from Kenzie and one try from Tony.

Next the boys were up against Loch Lomond who we had recognised in their initial match against Helensburgh as a stronger team. My word these boys could tackle and there were two players in particular who were almost a blur on the park as they ran. When Loch Lomond were in possession our boys showed some tenacious tackling, a strong defensive line and frequently turned the ball over. Our boys would then switched on their attack and Tony, Dylan and Kenzie were able to show off some of their signature runs. The boys put in some excellent team work and passed that ball back and forward across the park, spotting spaces in the oppositions defence and breaking through. Aron managed on several occasions to plough into Loch Lomond’s defensive line and tie up several of their players before offloading to a teammate who was able to exploit the spaces left in their defence. Our newest recruit, Aaron, also managed his first good run up the park and when he was tackled he held tight to that ball then popped it up to his teammate. Cumnock parents and coaches beamed with pride as our boys finished their second 20-minute match against another formidable opponent with a score of Loch Lomond 5 vs Cumnock 7.

The Cumnock P5s continue to improve week after week and develop as a team although as always there are areas where they could improve. After another successful weekend however, our boys deserve a massive pat on the back.

Squad: Aaron, Aron, Dylan, Jack, Kenzie, Tony
