P5s make their mark

For the second tournament of the season, Cumnock were invited to Cartha Queens Park RFC. It was clear from the off that our boys were out to impress once again this week. Their passing skills and defensive line are improving week on week. Today they also brought out an impressive attack, along with some tenacious tackling providing great turnover opportunities.

In our first match we faced a familiar foe from last week, Greenock. Again, it was a tight game where Cumnock had to stay on their toes. Defensively the boys worked well keeping a strong line, putting in their tackles and frequently turning the ball over. At one moment we collectively caught our breath as Jack appeared from nowhere and intercepted a pass mid-air then seamlessly flew for the try line. As he dived in for his first try of the game, the Cumnock parents erupted with cheers. Cumnock’s attack however was also exceptional, when in possession of the ball they held tight. With Jack scoring two tries and Tony scoring one, Cumnock secured their first win of the day 3-2.

All that can truly be said about our second game against Bishopton is “Go Dylan”. Dylan had wings on his feet today and was responsible for all four tries in this game. Bishopton fielded some fantastic players today, determined and quick footed. It was a real team effort to defend against a strong opposition but defend they did. Dylan, however, stole the show with his phenomenal runs and tries. After a very tentative seven minutes Cumnock and Bishopton drew 4-4.

Due to a lack of players Cartha and Paisley fielded a mixed team against our six boys. Cumnock again demonstrated some excellent rugby with plenty of tackles and turnovers as well as identifying and using space. The final score was Cumnock 5 – Cartha/Paisley 0 with Dylan scoring two tries, Kenzie scoring two tries and Aron scoring one.

Our last match of the day was Cumnock vs Helensburgh. By this point the Cumnock boys had played four games back to back with no subs and we expected them to tire; they proved us wrong. With bounding energy Kenzie and Tony had some fantastic runs and our newer addition Aaron put in some good tackles. With Kenzie scoring two tries, Jack scoring two tries and Tony scoring one, Cumnock secured a third victory 5-3 against another worthy opponent.

After a second successful tournament the coaches and parents could not be prouder of the progress our boys have made. With growing enthusiasm, the Cumnock RFC P5s are stepping up and providing spectators with some gripping rugby.

Squad: Aaron, Aron, Dylan, Jack, Kenzie, Tony
