As a result of pitch issues at Allan Glens RFC, Cumnock’s U15 team had the earlier start at Bishopbriggs. This could have explained the slow start made by the team with the hosts securing some early scores to take a two try lead. Cumnock just needed to shake the Sunday long lie out of their bodies and it was Ruiridh Airlie that made the first telling break when he fended off three tackles to smash over the line for Cumnock’s opening score. This pattern carried on with a tit for tat scoring through to the break with Cumnock trailing 27-21.
The coaching team stressed to the players and in particular the back line the importance of keeping their shape and in turn setting a stronger defensive pattern when possession was with the hosts. The second half saw the Cumnock side starting to play a more organised and effective team shape and starting to limit the scoring opportunities for the hosts. This also coupled with and renewed attacking desire saw the lead change hands a number of times of the match. As the final whistle blew the relief on the faces of the home side players coaches and support was plain to see as Allan Glens Held on for a 43-40.
Coach Thomas Bowditch commented after the game, “we are very pleased with the effort that the players put in during the game and but for a few defensive errors we would have secured the win. We look forward to building on this performance at home next week to Dalziel”.
