Cumnock Have Fun in The Sun

15s Have Fun in The Sun

Cumnock under 15’s annual tournament took place on Sunday at Broomfield in glorious sunshine. Despite the unfamiliar weather conditions the players from all teams concerned stepped up with some great rugby. Cumnock ran out winners in what was a very closely contested day.

Cumnock 5 Whitecraigs 0

Cumnock kicked off against old rivals Whitecraigs in the first of 3 20 minute round robin matches.. Whitecraigs started the stronger and put Cumnock under intense pressure which Cumnock made worse with poor handling. A serious of dropped passes meant that Cumnock couldn’t manage to get out their own half. Eventually making the use of the wind advantage Cumnock managed to work their way up the park. Eventually Jamie Drummond, the Mauchline Bulldozer, powered over the line for the only score of the match.

Cumnock 10 Marr 5

In the second match Cumnock started much stronger distributing much stronger rucking and more accurate passing. Scrum half Adam Watt had a fantastic performance with break after break and constant pressure on his opposite number. Scores came from ever reliable Drummond and tug of war ace Jock Welsh. Marr roared back in the last 5 minutes scoring a fine try and only being kept out by some resolute Cumnock defence.

Cumnock 15 Dalziel/Strathaven 7

The last and deciding tie took place with Cumnock needing a win or a draw to win the tournament. They seemed to be off to a great start when Drummond rampaged though for the opening score. Dalziel/Strathaven had other ideas as they pressured the |Cumnock defence before score a fine try through their captain. Cumnock fought back and scored a great long range effort rounded off by fast improving Ross Marr. Cumnock then had to weather a Dalziel/Strathaven storm as they hammered away at the Cumnock defence. With seconds to go Jamie Caldwell superbly turned the ball over before the ball was fed to Dylan Chidwick who ran 70 metres before offloading to Captain Andy Houston who finished the move off in the corner.

Coach Alan Montgomery said after the game, “ We are delighted to win as in all honesty each game went right down to the wire. The 3 other teams played some great rugby and it was great to just edge it. I am really pleased with how the boys improved as the tournament went on and also with the quality of some of the phases of play. A big thank you to Marr, Whitecraigs and Dalziel/Strathaven for making it such a great day of rugby, they should all be very proud of all their players.”

Next week Cumnock travel away to Greenock.
