Cumnock got back to conference duties after 3 weeks without a game.

Report by Morton Houston

The weather was perfect and the game didn’t disappoint either. Cumnock had a nervy start after their lay off and the handling was a bit rusty. Cumnock however didn’t take long to get onto the scoreboard. Following sustained pressure Jamie Drummond drove over for Cumnock’s first. Dalziel didn’t sit back and they quickly pushed deep into Cumnock territory before scoring from a driving maul. They added the conversion for a narrow 7-5 lead.
Cumnock entered a period of sustained pressure in the Dalziel half. They refused to buckle and snuffed out attack after attack from Cumnock. Eventually Cumnock moved the ball wide and Owen Young nipped over for their second.

In the second half the game became even more intense. Cumnock launched attack after attack only to be knocked back by robust Dalziel defence. Tackles flew in from both teams most notably from Matt Montgomery who flattened a rampaging prop and saved a try, and from Jamie Drummond who ran about tackling like a man possessed.

Cumnock added one more try when Ross Marr finished off another wide move but just couldn’t shake off a determined Dalziel outfit. Right at the death a Dalziel centre broke through in the middle of the park and seemed certain to score only to be tackled a metre from the line by Samuel “Dinky” Gillan saving a certain try.

Coach Alan Montgomery said after the game,” This was a pretty good performance. We were a bit rusty and there are certainly lots of things to work on but I am quite happy to get a win after 3 weeks off.”

Next week Cumnock 15s are invited to Scotstoun to play Alan Glens RFC on the 4g pitch before the Glasgow Warriors – Ospreys game.
