Report by Ian Park.

In the first game for over a month Cumnock’s u15’s finally managed to blood some more new players with a couple making their competitive debut. On the negative side they had to rely on making up the numbers with four S2 boys, who to a man played well and never looked out of place playing up a year.

To the game itself, the Cougars took the game by the scruff of the neck and on their first possession got the ball wide and scored under the posts. This was going to be a recurring theme in the game as Cumnock’s hands throughout the game was really good in the cold conditions and added to the improved support play which gave the breaking player options for the lay off.

Irvine for long periods of the game had good possession but just couldn’t break Cumnock’s defence which continues to tackle well. With the score at 32 – 0 at half time Cumnock just had to keep going in the second half and they did so making the 60 point mark with about 10 minutes remaining. Fair play to Irvine who wanted to keep going to the end of the hour mark and finally got their reward with a clever kick and chase for their first score.

The coaches have been impressed by the boys commitment in training and wondered if this could be transferred to games and it looks like the boys are taking much of it on board. However , there is still some work required in the scrum and rucks but until they have a settled starting XV this may take a little longer.

On the whole it was a good win with many positives especially the spread of scoring throughout the team with 6 players scoring the points and again a thanks to the S2’s who stepped in to complete the team.
