Report by Ian Park
Boosted with the luxury of having some spare players Cumnock gave Cumbernauld a couple of boys to make up the numbers.
Despite the conditions Cumnock tried to move the ball about and straight from the start the Cougars looked dangerous when on the run. It was only a matter of time before Cumnock broke the deadlock and after a couple mishaps they finally crossed the line for the first of their five first-half tries. The ball retention in poor conditions meant Cumnock dominated the half with the score 29 – 0 at the whistle.
In the second half Cumbernauld came out stronger, keeping the ball in their bigger forwards, with uncharacteristic poor tackling from Cumnock, Cumbernauld scored their only points of the game but they threatened more throughout the half possibly only the poor conditions stopping them from scoring more. Even with the hosts making more of a challenge of the game, when the Cumnock forwards secured the ball to feed the backs, Cumnock looked as though they could score when in possession.
Eventually the Cougars ran out good winners 49 – 5, with 5 try scorers and a few more coming close the team is continuing to improve. The coaches were again pleased with the boys performance in poor conditions (is the weather ever going to improve?) but will as always look for continued improvement.
